STEP 1

WINDING OF THE STRING

The string that comes in hanks is placed into reels and then into the tubs to start the warping of the streaking or background.

STEP 2

WARPING OF THE FABRIC

This procedure is done in the warping machine to define the length and the width of the shawl according to the desired size.
In this procedure, the fabric is made.

STEP 3

THE GRABBING

The grabbing consists of distributing the strings to make up cords.

STEP 4

THE POLISHING

Once the fabric is done with the grabbing, it has to be soaked with atol water, this way the cords are well formed and this helps to make the outlining.

STEP 5

OUTLINING OF THE SHAWL

Only after the fabric is divided into cords, the drawing of the shawl is made in many different knitting styles (double knitting, black arch, white arch, etcetera).

STEP 6

LASHING OF THE SHAWL

In this procedure all the gaps in the shawl are covered.

STEP 7

DYEING OF THE FABRIC

It is in this step that the unlashed gaps of fabric are dyed in colour, resulting, thus, in the drawing of the designs on the shawl.

STEP 8

WINDING OF THE STREAKS

This step is done after the warping and during the streaking. The fabric is wound in the julio to pull it afterwards to the loom and to begin with the weaving.

STEP 9

WARPING OF THE STREAKS

This process is done in the warping machine to define the dimensions of the shawl and for the streaking (background).

STEP 10

UNTYING OF THE FABRIC

This process consists of undoing the lashings protecting the fabric in different cords, giving as a result, an IKAT type pattern.

STEP 11

WEAVING OF THE SHAWL

Long before the Mexican Revolution, the bolita knitting shawls were very popular because of the delicacy and quality of the silk and cotton as well as for the intricate work that making one of this shawls represented. Weaving a shawl is one act of craftsmanship, wearing it is another matter of art altogether.

STEP 12

DYEING OF THE TIPS

Once the weaving of the shawl is finished, the tips are brushed in order to dye them in black or blue.

STEP 13

TYING OF THE TIPS OF THE SHAWL

In this final step of the process, different types and patterns of knots are tied by hand at the end of the tips of the shawl.

STEP 14

IRONING OF THE SHAWL

This is a very important step because it is part of the final process. Using wooden rollers calibrated into a chosen pressure, the shawl is ironed and given a dainty shine.
